Bigger is Better

Proper size and fit are crucial elements of style. It’s never OK to wear clothes that are too small, but oversized pieces can take a simple outfit to a more dynamic place.1Q1A8267Boyfriend blazer from LF Stores, Sandro tee, American Apparel jeans & socks, Sandro creepers, Oliver Peoples sunglasses: this is my go-to look lately; it’s comfortable, and the tomboy sizing (and admittedly clown-like shoes) brings a bit of eccentricity to such basic pieces. Sometimes I swap this footwear for a striped sock and my plain black platform sneakers.1Q1A8270

BANG BANG!

Why some staples need a makeover, and why others should remain untouched…1Q1A6792Revamped staples can be a wonderful thing. Dressed up versions of athletic classics like sweatshirts and joggers, for example, are huge right now, which makes chic comfort easy to achieve. Suddenly I can’t imagine life without my Sandro graphic sweatshirt and Vince jogger pants. Other times, however, designers get so caught up trying to reinvent classics that they’re just not classic anymore…

Believe it or not, I didn’t have a black leather jacket until today. I bought a simple, surprisingly real-looking faux leather bomber at Urban Outfitters in the tenth grade, and wore it constantly until it finally bit the dust last year. So, I’ve been looking for a more grown-up replacement ever since, only to find myself bombarded by embellishments on embellishments—designers have been overloading leathers with quilted shoulders, overly-dramatic collars, colors that go with just about nothing, and enough buckles and zippers to render them straight-up straight jackets. Leather is an investment, and a leather jacket should be versatile above all. Committing to a leather jacket has to be in the name of good old fashioned true love, because if you fall under the spell of fleeting trends, you’re going to want a divorce within the next two years, and that’ll cost ya.

Even the most basic black leather jacket looks badass, no theatrics necessary. Enter AllSaints Belvedere Jacket. We’re going to be together for a long time.1Q1A6813

Printed Pants, Ready to Dance

1Q1A3300When it comes to wearing a loud statement piece, I believe in keeping the rest simple. I also think comfort is key for a fun night out. Here I am in my Sandro printed high-waist pants, paired with an American Apparel spandex crop top to create an evening look that’s bold without being too bizarre, and comfortable without compromising cuteness.1Q1A3302They say beauty is pain, but I’m pretty relieved that towering heels are fading out of the fashion scene. Who wants to stomp Boston’s bricks and cobblestones in stilts? These sleek Jeffrey Campbell sandals with a low lucite heel are fun and easy on my feet (and at least one guy asks me if I’ve got a gold fish in there every time I wear them). I guess it’s time to address the fact that almost all my shoes are by Jeffrey Campbell…Fuck diamonds—JC is a girl’s best friend.1Q1A3293 - Version 2
