One of my favorite things about dressing for this season is the way cheerful springy-summery prints and colors prompt me to create modern takes on retro styles. My paisley button-down, cuffed pants, platform loafers and matchy-matchy accessories all have a ’60s/’70s vibe, but details like the cropped cut of my blouse, stacked rings, and my oh-so-millennial “OMG”-embossed clutch bring the look up to date.

Posh & Punk: A Lesson in Layering

Winter is all about texture and layering, which makes for an awesome opportunity to combine contrasting styles, and given that my last outfit post featured this coat as part of my Halloween costume (I promise the Sauce is back for real this time), I thought I’d share how I wear it when I’m just being Annie. I love pairing prim pieces, like this silk blouse, wool hat, and these revamped oxford-style shoes with rock n’ roll elements, like this concert tee and my beloved shag. A crisp collar with a graphic tee creates an unexpected bohemian vibe that’s neither too contrived nor too sloppy. You can take this look from lunch on Newbury Street to a show at the Sinclair or drinks at a swanky bar without having to make any day-to-night changes. Just make sure you have a bold lip color you love in your purse! Mixing prints and playing with matching-clashing colors can help brighten up your winter wardrobe, and I try to embrace the cold weather with lots of fuzz, whether it be on my coat, my purse, or both.

Easter, graduation season, and the general arrival of warm weather means everyone is breaking out their little white dresses—but they’re not limited to girly-girl styling. To embrace your LWD’s versatility/avoid looking like you’re headed to your first Communion, ditch your preppy wedges and Jack Rogers sandals, and try combat boots and other vintage-inspired accessories instead.

When it comes to matching-clashing, mod-inspired looks make a great foundation for wearing different hues of the same color. I love how these two shades of green taunt the eye and play with each other. The coverage of the vintage turtleneck balances out the micro mini, and my circle sunglasses, also olive green, give the whole outfit an extra retro kick.

I love the juxtaposition of the classic, prep school cardigan look in the front and the fierce, would-be kitschy sequin tiger in the back, which I snagged for 60% off at LF’s only sale of the season. Their whole fall/winter collection had an awesome, updated grunge-inspired vibe. To keep sequins casual, reach for simple staples like this grey Helmut Lang tank and these black J Brand coated, high-rise skinnies, and black Tod’s boots. I topped it all off with MAC lipstick in “Violetta,”  just to keep things weird.

Mod

1Q1A7269Scalloped shift dress a la Nasty Gal, Tod’s boots, See Eyewear sunglasses.

Other than free-flowing pubes, I think every trend that started in the ’60s should and will remain in style forever. Micro-mini skirts and shifts, oversized shades, big blocks of black and white, and boots that cause you to hear Nancy Sinatra’s voice in your head…the right mod look is both quirky and sophisticated, and that’s a beautiful thing. And who doesn’t want to feel like the factory girl sometimes?1Q1A7270

Ladies is Pimps, too…

Shall we shag now, or shall we shag later? You might think a shag coat is an unrealistic item that will just sit in your closet collecting even more fuzz, but you’d be wrong. Once you have one, the answer is always now. I bought my faux fur shag coat from LF Stores in 2011, and it’s been an essential part of my fall/winter experience ever since, to the point where I stare at it longingly during spring and summer. Why? Because the right shag coat can evoke the spirit of Cruella DeVille, a gangster rap star AND Kurt Cobain in the most deliciously weird way. The shag coat is a conversation starter: you will find yourself talking to more strangers whilst rocking your shag—and (WARNING) being touched by them, too.1Q1A5581Here I am in another American Apparel oversized chiffon button-up, tied up to show just a sliver of skin over my Urban Outfitters harem trousers.1Q1A5585

1Q1A5601

1Q1A5733I’m wearing my Jeffrey Campbell booties to give the look a little height, but an oversized blazer and loafers or oxfords like these (or these) would give the pants and blouse that menswear-inspired look that everyone’s going for these days.
