Piece, Love, & Flannel

That’s essentially how I feel about Piece Apparel’s entire inventory. Every brand and store sells their own versions of the “basics,” and you can wind up swimming in a sea of staples that are almost, but not quite right. Piece Apparel makes quality basics in just the right cuts and colors to round out your wardrobe and step up your style—like their flannels, for instance. In case I haven’t mentioned it before, I’ve spent the last few years totally immersed in the 90s fashion revival, and thus searching for the perfect flannels to complete my updated grunge vibe. A great flannel should be easy to find, but I instead found myself repeatedly disappointed by flannels that were too big, used heinous color combinations, or were smothered in studs and other unnecessary embellishments. The Piece Apparel flannels have a classic feel, and are loose enough that you easily can rock one around your waist or open over a T shirt, but tailored enough to wear it comfortably under a sweater, or tucked into your pants without the hem surpassing your underwear. A pair of tights and a leather bomber will take this look right into Fall.

I’m So Saucy

As far as I can tell, one never stops drawing outfit inspiration from Clueless. I personally watch it very…not sporadically. That being said, Iggy Azalea’s ubiquitous “Fancy” video, which pays major homage to the film’s fashions, has taken my obsession to new heights. And while the iconic yellow plaid skirt set and the, like, really important red Alaia dress are obvious gems worth copycatting, Iggy got me paying closer attention to the amazing black and white “athletic” attire the Beverly Hills girls wear to gym class. So forget pro athlete, and think faux athlete.

My boyfriend told me this outfit made me look like a cast member in Weekend At Bernie’s. Compliment accepted. Anyway, Alexander Wang has obviously mastered and updated the T-shirt dress, making this one a bit longer in the back. Superga is the go-to brand for a classic tennis shoe, and I love my white ones so much that I’m seriously considering this gorgeous silk pair, designed by the good people at Superga, along with the help of The Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine.

As I stated in my Globe interview, I’ve been drawing a lot of summer inspiration from the wardrobe in the 1992 movie White Men Can’t Jump. I love the sort of West coast-cool, sporty-grunge vibe. This vintage Mickey Mouse top, cut much like a basketball jersey, oversized denim and platform sneakers make just one of my many outfits ideas that have stemmed from this classic flick. (I may or may not have recently purchased tie-dye mom jeans…) The red lips and pussy purse add a fun, feminine touch.

Denim on Denim: Simplicity with an Edge

Madewell chambray button-down, Carmar distressed boyfriend jeans from LF, AllSaints leather jacket, Alexander Wang ‘Diego’ bucket bag, Tod’s boots.

The only thing better than denim and leather is denim on denim and leather. Virtually every girl has the pieces for this outfit in her closet, and they create a reliable formula for a look that’s effortless, casual, rough around the edges, yet still polished. If you’re in the market for a chambray shirt, Madewell is the ultimate destination for all your redneck tuxedo needs.

Sleek, Simple & Classic

1Q1A8619 - Version 2Sandro ‘two-in-one’ jumper, Carmar jeans from LF, Jeffrey Campbell heels, Chanel eyeglasses.

I might be the only person on earth who ever prayed for impaired vision, but I’ve always envied people with glasses, so I felt nothing but joy when I recently found out I’m no longer part of the 20/20 club. These slightly oversized Chanel frames with a subtle cat eye—and this whole outfit—are a nod to my mother, the chicest person I know, and whose eyeglass collection might seriously rival Iris Apfel’s. (The lipstick is a nod to Iris.) My Sandro sweater is actually all one piece, creating the illusion of a collared shirt underneath without the bulk of layers. The ultra skinny jeans and minimal sandals with a lucite heel elongate the look and keep it super sleek.

Warby Parker Exclusive

1Q1A8532I was so excited when eyewear company Warby Parker asked me to review their new summer sunglasses collection, which debuts today! Sunglasses have always been my favorite accessory, and Warby Parker makes beautiful, fun, affordable frames for men and women—and for a great cause. For every pair of sunglasses sold, Warby Parker donates a pair to someone in need, and their sunglasses start at just $95. In short, Warby Parker offers you the chance to buy stylish sunglasses and help those less fortunate without going broke yourself. That’s what I call a fashion win-win-win.

1Q1A8543My current Warby Parkers are the ‘Madison’ in Rum Cherry, which are part of their permanent core collection.1Q1A8527Theory printed blouse, vintage Ralph Lauren Collection shell sweater, Maje shorts, Jeffrey Campbell ‘Purvis’ platform loafers, ‘Lone Rider’ wool hat from Nasty Gal.1Q1A8537

I chose the ‘Madison’ frames because they feature a classic, flattering shape, and because this particular shade of burgundy-red is so versatile. Vibrant enough to bring a little life to my first, black and white outfit, yet understated enough to wear with more colorful looks without going over the top, Warby Parker sunglasses are perfect for people with eclectic style and taste.

Warby Parker’s new Spectrum Sun Collection, available starting today, achieves the same kind of cool with a classic, retro vibe and a fresh selection of colors. Every pair lends itself to endless looks for every occasion. Plus, their sturdy plastic frames will survive whatever craziness summer brings your way—a day at the beach, music festivals, the inside of your purse…

After gushing over the whole new summer collection, I was able to narrow myself down three favorites, shown above, but I can’t seem to settle on one pair just yet. Each truly evokes the simultaneously adventurous and laid-back summer experience, and many looks from the summer line will carry over seamlessly into your fall/winter wardrobe. Stay tuned to see which pair I choose to take with me to Bonnaroo Music Festival in June, and be sure to visit the Warby Parker website to see the rest of the Spectrum Sun Collection, and to learn more about their charitable work. Warby Parker also has a store located at 83 Newbury Street here in Boston.
