Shall we shag now, or shall we shag later? You might think a shag coat is an unrealistic item that will just sit in your closet collecting even more fuzz, but you’d be wrong. Once you have one, the answer is always now. I bought my faux fur shag coat from LF Stores in 2011, and it’s been an essential part of my fall/winter experience ever since, to the point where I stare at it longingly during spring and summer. Why? Because the right shag coat can evoke the spirit of Cruella DeVille, a gangster rap star AND Kurt Cobain in the most deliciously weird way. The shag coat is a conversation starter: you will find yourself talking to more strangers whilst rocking your shag—and (WARNING) being touched by them, too.
Here I am in another American Apparel oversized chiffon button-up, tied up to show just a sliver of skin over my Urban Outfitters harem trousers.

I’m wearing my Jeffrey Campbell booties to give the look a little height, but an oversized blazer and loafers or oxfords like these (or these) would give the pants and blouse that menswear-inspired look that everyone’s going for these days.

A beanie and a relaxed knit tee give the coat a chill, grunge vibe.
The shag coat and these limited edition Jeffrey Campbell “Warrant” platforms from LF Stores took my vintage Ralph Lauren cashmere slip dress to that perfect level of eccentric glitz that we all crave on New Year’s Eve.
And here I am on the following New Year’s, wearing the coat over a crushed velvet burgundy body-con dress. This photo, taken by my best friend Brooke, has over 12,000 notes on my Tumblr account. Check it out!
