After Bostonians endured the worst of winters, summer’s already halfway over and the weather has the nerve to be…weird. With scattered showers almost every week, I’ve found myself reaching for beanies more often than one expects in July. Lightweight joggers and oversized sweaters that tie easily around the waist are key pieces right now. Animal prints don’t have to be too dressy or ultra-feminine in a sporty context, so try pairing them with your favorite sneakers for a fun, casual look.

I visited the SoWa Vintage Market on Sunday, and the warm weather and colorful vintage racks inspired me to break out some funky springtime flare. Much to my delight, today has been even sunnier. After months of pretty much exclusively wearing layers of black, white, and gray, it felt really good to mix these bold prints and resurrect my straw hat and wooden flatforms. Since mixing prints is tricky business, I almost always pair a colorful one with a black and white pattern. To make the whole look more cohesive, I threw on this fabulous magenta cross body bag, which picks up the pinkish accents in my printed shorts. Silky fabrics and fringe accents really capture the spirit of spring/summer. If you want to freshen up your springtime beauty routine, try a swipe of pale pink lipstick, like “Obsessed” by Urban Decay.

High-waisted pants with a crop top is my go-to nighttime look, because I personally like to show a little skin without risking a wardrobe malfunction. (Getting in and out of cars gracefully is not my specialty.) I also like to create the optical illusion that I have long legs. When you find an outfit combination/particular silhouette that flatters your figure and makes you feel good, stick with it when in doubt. Having a few “fashion formulas”, as I call them, can seriously cut down the stress of getting dressed, and you won’t seem like a repeat offender if you collect a variety of prints/colors and switch up your accessories. Trying different hair and makeup styles can also completely change the vibe of one look. (Warning: do not wear cheetah-print pants in public unless you’re comfortable talking to strangers.)

Mixing Prints

Mixing prints has become a major trend over the last couple of years, and I’ve personally found it very intimidating, especially because the failed attempts are really tragic.1Q1A6764Since leopard/cheetah print is arguably the most classic print (apart from florals), and black and white is the most basic color combination, these Madewell “Teddy” calf hair loafers and my American Apparel illustrated chiffon blouse in “Cat Fancy” are an easy pair for print-mixing beginners like myself. These waxed J-Brand jeans in a deep turquoise and my REISS London felt “Ava” hat in burgundy add the intrigue of complimentary colors.1Q1A6768Unless you’re totally opposed to animal prints for whatever reason (weirdos…), you need shoes like these. Why? Because the shape is classic and comfortable, and the print/textile can brighten up any outfit. On those days when you just don’t have the energy to compose anything more exciting than a T-shirt and jeans or an all black ensemble, these shoes will be the remedy for feeling drab.1Q1A6770

1Q1A6773Yes, this shirt has cat faces all over it, and I know you’re probably starting to think I’m obsessed with cats and have twenty of them in my apartment. The truth is, I don’t like them at all. Well, they don’t like me. A Thai manicurist once told me this is because I was born in the year of the horse. Whatever. Cat fights aside, I do have a strange affinity for cat-faced clothing, and although I have far too many of these oversized blouses from American Apparel (as you’ve also probably noticed), this one is my lucky shirt. I’ve scored some boys, some free beers, and even a job in this shirt.1Q1A6774

Ladies is Pimps, too…

Shall we shag now, or shall we shag later? You might think a shag coat is an unrealistic item that will just sit in your closet collecting even more fuzz, but you’d be wrong. Once you have one, the answer is always now. I bought my faux fur shag coat from LF Stores in 2011, and it’s been an essential part of my fall/winter experience ever since, to the point where I stare at it longingly during spring and summer. Why? Because the right shag coat can evoke the spirit of Cruella DeVille, a gangster rap star AND Kurt Cobain in the most deliciously weird way. The shag coat is a conversation starter: you will find yourself talking to more strangers whilst rocking your shag—and (WARNING) being touched by them, too.1Q1A5581Here I am in another American Apparel oversized chiffon button-up, tied up to show just a sliver of skin over my Urban Outfitters harem trousers.1Q1A5585

1Q1A5733I’m wearing my Jeffrey Campbell booties to give the look a little height, but an oversized blazer and loafers or oxfords like these (or these) would give the pants and blouse that menswear-inspired look that everyone’s going for these days.
