One of my favorite things about dressing for this season is the way cheerful springy-summery prints and colors prompt me to create modern takes on retro styles. My paisley button-down, cuffed pants, platform loafers and matchy-matchy accessories all have a ’60s/’70s vibe, but details like the cropped cut of my blouse, stacked rings, and my oh-so-millennial “OMG”-embossed clutch bring the look up to date.

Piece, Love, & Flannel

That’s essentially how I feel about Piece Apparel’s entire inventory. Every brand and store sells their own versions of the “basics,” and you can wind up swimming in a sea of staples that are almost, but not quite right. Piece Apparel makes quality basics in just the right cuts and colors to round out your wardrobe and step up your style—like their flannels, for instance. In case I haven’t mentioned it before, I’ve spent the last few years totally immersed in the 90s fashion revival, and thus searching for the perfect flannels to complete my updated grunge vibe. A great flannel should be easy to find, but I instead found myself repeatedly disappointed by flannels that were too big, used heinous color combinations, or were smothered in studs and other unnecessary embellishments. The Piece Apparel flannels have a classic feel, and are loose enough that you easily can rock one around your waist or open over a T shirt, but tailored enough to wear it comfortably under a sweater, or tucked into your pants without the hem surpassing your underwear. A pair of tights and a leather bomber will take this look right into Fall.

Maximizing Your Favorites

There are some outfits you love so much that you can’t help but wear them over and over again. Plus, blame it on global warming, but September has been a really weird time in Massachusetts thus far: One day it’s 97 degrees, the next day there’s a high of 59. This is why it’s great that stores like American Apparel make all their best merchandise in every color and print imaginable: it makes it easy to wear your favorite looks from one season in slightly different ways, and to wear some of those same pieces throughout the rest of the year, without seeming like a “repeat offender.” Here are a few different ensembles that combine several of the same items, worn in various ways to keep things interesting and weather-appropriate.1Q1A2718 - Version 3Here I am, standing awkwardly in my American Apparel Stretch Twill High-Waist Side Zipper Shorts in “dark mint,” with an American Apparel Tie-Up Blouse, pastel pink Jeffrey Campbell oxfords and See Eyewear sunglasses.1Q1A2711
