Kiehl’s Apothecary

In-store photos by Igor Burlak

#KiehlsGetsPersonal

I’m so excited to be discussing skincare more often here on the blog. I recently had the privilege of collaborating with one of the most prestigious skincare lines in the country, Kiehl’s Apothecary, which was established in 1851. As a staple skincare company that has been able to stand the test of time, Kiehl’s knows how to modernize their old-school approach with the latest and most innovative skincare techniques and ingredients. Take their latest product launch, Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations, for example. You can now schedule a consultation at your nearest Kiehl’s location to meet with a trained expert who will help determine your skincare needs, and create a customized serum just for you! This was a science class I could get into…Whether your goal is hydration, pore-minimization, or wrinkle-reduction, the experts at Kiehl’s can concoct a formula with your name on it—literally! They even print a special label, just for you. And don’t worry, you’ll also receive a little packet explaining what’s in your personalized product and how to use it properly

I’ve been using my custom concentrate nightly for just about two weeks now, and I’m definitely loving the results. The serum has a velvety texture that leaves my skin nice and smooth, and the pore-minimizing effects have allowed me to reduce how often I have to use a cleansing mask, or harsh tools like my Clarisonic facial brush, which can dry out my skin. Everyone’s complexion and skincare needs are different, making it totally worth the trip to seek out skin solutions made especially for you. What may seem old-fashioned is actually both logical and luxurious.

#KiehlsGivesBack

During my visit at Kiehl’s on Newbury, I also learned about their creative and charitable collaborations. Each year, Kiehl’s collaborates with artists to put together a Limited Edition Holiday Collection that will benefit those in need. This year, Kiehl’s has teamed up with artist-duo Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller of FAILE to support Feeding America. 100% of Kiehl’s net profits from this collection benefits Feeding America, providing 1.1 million meals to food insecure people in this country. This cause means a lot to me, as I personally feel that a lot of Americans use poverty and hunger in other countries as a distraction from our own problems, while there are so many people here right in the United States who aren’t sure when or how they’ll acquire their next meal. Art has always been a powerful way to inspire philanthropy and change, and I love when the fashion and beauty lead by example on this front. The hypnotic gold-and-black artwork FAILE have conceptualized for this collection puts a fresh spin on Kiehl’s iconic packaging, and while the gold definitely embraces the holiday spirit, these products will still look awesome once the holidays have come and gone.

  1. Now let’s talk about my top three favorite Kiehl’s products *except* for my customized serum, since that’s just for me:
    1. Breakout Control Targeted Acne Spot Treatment: I tend to struggle with isolated blemishes, so I’m always looking for effective yet gentle spot treatments to erase little zits here and there. This lightweight, sulfer-infused treatment zaps zits quickly, without leaving my skin dry or red.
  2. Creme De Crops Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter: This Kiehl’s classic is decadent, and always looks lovely on one’s vanity, bathroom shelves, etc.
  3. Damage Repairing & Rehydrating Leave-In Treatment: The third and final product on this list actually strays from the skincare category. After a brief but serious stint of dye jobs, my strands have felt a little dry and need some TLC. I’ve seen great results within the past couple of weeks, and would definitely recommend this product to anyone whose hair suffers during dry winter weather.

REKS Optics: #BeUnbreakable

Sunglasses are by far my favorite accessory, but they often come with a big price tag, and since most are pretty easy to break, that means they also come with a certain level of responsibility. Who hasn’t had their heart broken by a broken pair of shades? (I’m still sulking over a pair that lost their life during the excitement of Bonnaroo 2014. R.I.P.)

Much to my amazement and delight, I was recently introduced to REKS Optics, a new line of affordable, cute, customizable sunglasses that bend…but don’t break. Yes, you read that correctly. Go ahead—bend and twist your REKS, toss them into your purse, or cram them into a suitcase, and they’ll still remain as good as new. REKS Optics’ unique soft touch material renders their sunnies perfect for travel, sport, or for downright clumsy people, like myself. But REKS doesn’t want you to sacrifice style for practicality. You can choose from six frames, eight frame colors, and eleven different polarized lens colors—some mirrored, some not. For somewhere between just $30-$60, you can customize the perfect shades for your poolside look without having to worry if it might be precarious to wear them in the water. Plus, the soft touch material prevents REKS from wobbling or sliding on your face while you’re on the move. Scroll down to see more color combinations in the round-style frames, which are my personal favorite:

REKS can add such flair to such a variety of looks, it’s really hard to believe they can’t break—and won’t break the bank! The great news for you, my beloved Fashion Saucers? You can get an exclusive offer when you customize your own REKS by using the code TheFashionSauce at checkout. So what are you waiting for? The latest way to #StaySaucy is to #BeUnbreakable. (Don’t forget to show off how you rock your REKS by sharing photos and using the hashtag #BeUnbreakable on social media! Follow REKS Optics on Instagram here.)

Primark has been an utter sensation in the UK for years now, and we here in the States finally don’t need a passport to indulge in its awesomeness. The fashion powerhouse, which is basically like H&M meets Zara on steroids, is in the process of launching eight stores across America, and made its American debut right here in Boston earlier this month. So, for those of you who still think Boston and fashion are mutually exclusive, think again. The enormous store in Boston’s Downtown Crossing is an overwhelming four floors with a ridiculously vast selection of men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, and home goods, all for shockingly reasonable prices. For the cost of what I would typically assume could buy me one pair of shoes, I was able to purchase seven stylish, versatile pieces from Primark (—stay tuned to see more tomorrow, and beyond!). From endless basics, to tons of radical statement pieces, the only problem one could possibly have at Primark is figuring out where to start. The shoe selection gave me a rush of endorphins comparable to a really great first date—and by the way, if you’re looking for an outfit for a date, or virtually any occasion that doesn’t call for black tie attire, go to Primark. Immediately. I think what impressed me most was the incredible selection of affordable outerwear. Styles and colors of jackets, coats, winter vests, and faux fur accents have really expanded over the past couple of years, but outwear has been notoriously expensive for much longer. I feel like a lot of young women tend to avoid outerwear when going out at night until the weather absolutely demands it, 1: because a lot of effective outerwear is just downright bulky and unattractive, and 2: because of reason 1, we want to ditch our coats as soon as we arrive at our destination, and that leads to reason 3: the frequent loss and theft of said ditched outerwear. The gorgeous and funky jackets, vests, and coats at Primark will get you seriously excited for colder weather (even after last year’s nearly apocalyptic winter), and it’s all so fun and stylish, you won’t want to take it off, or will at least feel encouraged to carry it on your arm all night for everyone to see.

As for the outfit I’m wearing above, let me just say that these jeans are hands down my new favorite pair (and I own quite a few pairs of jeans). Being a short person with legs the length of an elementary schooler’s and the hips of, you know, a full-grown woman, it’s hard for me to find jeans that fit just right. Every pair of jeans I own is too long, and since alterations are expensive, I tend to just live with the weird, scrunchy leg-warmer effect skinny jeans have on my short self. Primark, however, has an endless selection of jeans in every cut, wash and style imaginable, and these ankle-grazers have answered my long-awaited denim prayers. They also happen to be extremely comfortable with excellent flexibility without looking cheap. And could these patent oxfords be any cuter?! I’ll inevitably be rocking them almost every day, as they’re easy to wear with both classic and edgier outfits. I could honestly ramble on forever about my new obsession with Primark (especially since the store itself seems to go on forever), but I have lots more to show you very soon, so I’ll stop here for now. In the meantime, why are you still reading this? PRIMARK IS OPEN IN BOSTON.

IMG_0935The UNOde50 Star-Tremendous Ring and Left Hanging Earrings.

I was recently introduced to UNOde50, a unique, Spanish line of jewelry and accessories. While I’m quickly building quite the collection, this statement cocktail ring and delicate but edgy skull drop-earrings are my absolute favorite pieces so far. Both pieces make it easy to keep an outfit simple without looking bland, and the earrings give me a reason to pull my hair back, which I typically never do. Everything by UNOde50 has a signature, raw quality that I’ve never seen elsewhere. If you’re looking for jewelry that will set you apart from the crowd, visit the UNOde50 website, or stop by their beautiful shop at the Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

I could put on a cool front and act like I’m not super excited about this—and I’ll surely have a more relaxed perspective on promotional posts going forward—but right now, I need to geek out for a moment. The fact that my blog is on anyone’s radar continues to blow my mind, so when I received an email inviting me to participate in Coach’s latest Instagram-driven campaign, I spent a good twenty minutes utterly convinced I was being catfished, or punk’d. Established in 1941, Coach, Inc. is one of the foremost American fashion brands, and it’s among the major labels I’ve been aware of the longest in my fashion-loving lifetime (—anyone who was anyone had a Coach wristlet in the ’00s). The brand always brings the word classic to mind, and while it certainly also stands for American style, what it means to be or look “American” continues to expand constantly. I’m so thrilled to represent Coach, but especially to do so with a not-so-classic hair color.

The ‘Nolita’ Satchel, which I opted for in black, is from Coach’s “Wear Now, Wear Later” collection, and I think that title says it all. Though the bag is part of the brand’s Spring 2015 series, it can easily be styled for any season (and I’ve already carried it every single day since its arrival). In addition, the clean, minimalist design lends itself to outfits both dressy and casual, edgy and classic, and I always value versatility first when it comes to accessories. I absolutely love that it comes with an adjustable, detachable crossbody strap (which you can see on the Coach website), essentially giving me two bags in one. The crossgrain leather adds a subtle texture that gives the bag that extra hint of luxury and uniqueness.
