The early 2000s were a rough time in the world of fashion—velour tracksuits, pastel UGGs, and unflattering, low-rise flared jeans scarred us all, and we cleansed ourselves of these cringe-worthy fashion failures with skinny jeans. For many years, we seemed to live by an unspoken law that skinnies were the only acceptable jeans for the stylish woman, and this wasn’t such a bad thing. In the era of solely-skinny denim, I’d like think society zeroed in on more sophisticated street style, and we’ve earned back the privilege of variety. It started with the comeback of ’90s classics like mom jeans and boyfriend jeans, and now there’s a new silhouette in town. Cropped jeans with a flared hem, also known as kick flares, are trending everywhere lately, and I’m totally smitten. Kind of a denim response to culottes, kick flares are a cool, offbeat way to mix up your look. Since I’m 5’2″ with very short legs, these BDG jeans are definitely a little longer than intended, but with a moderately high heel, I’m still able to achieve the desired effect. When browsing kick flares, look for finishing touches like a high waist and raw edges for a fresh, more modern look.
